East Woodhay Society – January Newsletter

Jane Vince

It is with sadness I pass on the news that Jane Vince passed away on the 22nd December. Our thoughts are with Bill and the rest of the family. Jane was not only an active member of the community but also the East Woodhay Society and was a long-standing committee member.

Jane’s funeral will be at The West Berkshire Crematorium on Tuesday 16th January at 12.45 pm. For those wishing to attend, the family have requested no dark colours and, if possible, to wear something pink. They have also requested no flowers but any donations to be made to the Newbury Cancer Care Trust. This can be made, either directly, at the crematorium or via Camp Hopson Funeral Directors.

EWS Aims

The Committee (members listed below) recently met to review the aims of the society to ensure that we are continuing to focus actions and activities for the residents of East Woodhay.

The East Woodhay Society aims to benefit residents of the Parish by: –

  • promoting social activities in order to encourage a community spirit
  • campaigning on issues of local importance, particularly those involving planningand the environment
  • undertaking activities which improve our local environment
  • supporting a charity nominated by the membership. We are only able to do this with the support of the community and I encourage everyone to become members. A copy of the membership form is available at the end of this newsletter and please also include the specific areas of interest you have; this will help us focus our activities and campaigning. Some people have already spoken to me about parking and general traffic concerns in the parish and have asked the society to help – become a member and let me know what you think. You can email your form to eastwoodhaysociety@wooltonhill.com

The names of Committee Members are:
Mark Rand (Chair), John Angle, Avril Cole, Louise Rand, Mike Robinson, Alan Stapleton (Secretary), Bill Vince (Treasurer)

If you are on Facebook why not ‘Like’ or ‘Follow’ the EWS page @eastwoodhaysociety where you can see additional updates to these notes and also to share comments with others.

Previous event: Christmas charity walk

A total of 170 turned out for the 33rd Christmas charity walk on 27th December, despite freezing temperatures and a covering of snow. This event was arranged in conjunction with the local luncheon group, Los Jubilados as well as our neighbouring group, the Highclere Society. Thanks to Andrew and Lisa Watson, for their hospitality in Hollington Lane, where mince pies, donated by Budgens Wash Common and Charles Mills of Budgens Mortimer, together with mulled mine, were served.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event which raised £600. This amount is being matched and so £1200 will be going to The Rosemary Appeal.

Info: Please note that The Rampant Cat kitchen is closed between 4th and 23rd January. The bar is open as usual.
