This is based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of a Royal Navy captain. Raised by her great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Eventually Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar’s son who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

Thursday 19 October

August: Osage County (USA, 15, 121mins) directed by John Wells takes a look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. A stellar cast is headed up by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.
